Keep it under one page, no exceptions. A CV can stretch to multiple pages. A cover letter cannot.

What Should a Physician Cover Letter Include?

Make sure this information matches your CV exactly. A mismatch between the two documents is a small thing, but recruiters notice small things.
One more detail that competitors for your target job routinely miss: name your file properly. “JSmith_CoverLetter_MercyCardiology.pdf” gets matched to the right position instantly. “coverletter_final_v3.docx” does not.
2. Address Your Letter to the Proper Person
Writing โTo Whom It May Concernโ just wonโt cut it. Every cover letter should be addressed directly to the person who will be reading it.
Take the time to research the name of the hiring manager, which is usually the department chair. If online research turns up nothing, call the employer and ask.

So they read your letter looking for one thing above almost everything else: a believable reason you want to live and work in their town.
If you’re applying for a position in the Midwest, the employer wants to know that Midwestern life is what you’re looking for. Do your research on the community and the patients the employer serves. Let them know you love the hardworking people of Tennessee, the family-oriented communities of Kentucky, or the grit of New Yorkers. The more excited you seem about the location, the better your odds of an interview.

5. Mention Personal Connections if You Have Them
If you have a personal connection to the town where the position is located, say so. Maybe you grew up there. Maybe you went to school nearby, or visited once and fell in love with the place. Whatever the reason, a genuine tie to the area is one of the strongest signals you can send.
6. Briefly Mention Some of Your Skills
You do not need to recap your practical skills. Those live in your CV. Use the cover letter to draw attention to one or two aspects of the position you are exceptionally qualified for.
Give a brief, specific example of how you excelled in your current or previous role. Case volumes, a program you built, an award you earned. Details that map to the job posting.
Don’t forget soft skills. Communication, teamwork, and leadership carry real weight with hiring committees, but only when you show them. “I’m a strong communicator” is filler. “I led our department’s transition to a new EHR and trained twelve colleagues on it” is evidence.
If teaching or research opportunities exist at the organization and those things interest you, say so. And if you’re bilingual, have volunteer experience relevant to the patient population, or require visa sponsorship, be upfront about it. 7. Include a Thank You and a Next Step
Every cover letter should conclude with a thank you and a push toward next steps. Thank the reader for their time, then make a polite, confident request for an interview. Make it clear you want the opportunity to discuss your qualifications in greater detail, and tell them the best way to reach you.
Explain Any Gaps in Your CV
If your CV shows a gap in training or practice, address it briefly in the letter. One sentence is usually enough.
An unexplained gap invites assumptions, and applications get passed over for it. A short, matter-of-fact explanation, like time off for family, a research year, or an international rotation, removes the question before it gets asked. If you’re finishing training and preparing for your first job search after residency, lean on your clinical experience, case volumes, and the strength of your program. Enthusiasm counts for a lot at this stage.
If you’re ten years in, achievements do the talking. Leadership roles, programs you’ve grown, outcomes you can point to. Experienced physicians can also say something about why they’re making a move, especially if the new role restores something the current one lacks, like more clinical time and less administration. Just keep that framing positive.
What Your Cover Letter Should NOT Include

Knowing what to leave out matters as much as knowing what to put in.
Your cover letter should not rehash your CV. Let the CV speak for itself.
Skip anything negative. No pessimism about the job, the industry, or healthcare in general, and absolutely no criticism of your current or former employer. Even justified complaints read as red flags.
Leave salary out of it. Compensation questions belong in the contract negotiation stage, not the introduction. The same goes for a list of demands. You can state whether you want full-time or part-time work, but this is not the moment to say you’ll only work two days a week or refuse call. Save reasonable specifics for the interview.
Avoid humor and sarcasm unless you know the reader personally. Tone is hard to read on paper, and a joke that lands wrong costs you the interview.
And don’t sound desperate. Even if this is your dream job, let your credentials make the case.
Grammar
If your cover letter or CV contains typos, you probably won’t get an interview. This is a profession where documentation errors have consequences, and hiring managers read a sloppy letter as a preview of sloppy charts.
Proofread it several times. Read it out loud. Then have a colleague or a professional writer look it over before you send it.
A Note on Using AI to Write Your Cover Letter
Plenty of physicians now draft cover letters with ChatGPT or similar tools, and recruiters can usually tell. AI-generated letters share a certain polished sameness, and sameness defeats the entire purpose of the document.
Use AI as an editor if you like. Ask it to tighten a draft or catch errors. But the personal details that actually get you interviews, your tie to the community, your specific case experience, the real reason you want this job, have to come from you.
