We define anticipation as a feeling of excitement about something that is going to happen. Or the act of preparing for something. On average, physicians spend at least 10 years in training and preparing to step into their career. In most cases, comparing the awareness level of whatโ€™s actually included in the contract or isnโ€™t included, is a bit lopsided. On one side of the table is the health care organization or practice with their team of attorneys and on the other side of the table is, you. Being presented with the offer usually leads to many different emotions. All in the midst of trying to evaluate the compensation, benefits, implications, ramifications and details of a legal document.

The majority of physicians who interview and then get presented with a job offer and contract usually feel that they either canโ€™t negotiate, shouldnโ€™t negotiate, or that there really arenโ€™t areas for negotiation, that the offer is what it is.

Physician Contracts: Independent Contractor or Employee?

As a physician, there will likely come a time when you need to secure a new position with a hospital, a health care group, or a privately-owned medical practice. All are opportunities in which to practice your specialty, earn a commensurate salary, and provide care for patients.

But not all positions are the same.

While itโ€™s common to be hired as a full-time employee, thereโ€™s also a possibility that youโ€™ll be presented with the option to work as an independent contractor.

And those are two very different things.

Before you sign your next physician contract, make sure you know the difference between working as an employee and working as an independent contractor. There are pros and cons to each, so youโ€™ll need to weigh your options to determine which scenario is right for you.
