Let’s Review Your Disability Insurance Policy
Every disability insurance policy has language buried in the contract that determines whether your coverage will actually pay when you file a claim. A proper review looks at:
- Definition of disability. True own-occupation? Modified? Any-occupation? For your specialty, this is the difference between a paid claim and a denied one.
- Benefit amount vs. current income. Locked in as a resident? Your attending income has probably outgrown your coverage. We’ll show you the gap.
- Rider configuration. COLA (inflation protection), Future Increase Option, Residual Disability. Missing riders quietly limit what your policy is worth.
- Elimination and benefit periods. How long until benefits start, and how long they continue. Longer benefit periods with shorter elimination periods are the gold standard.
- Mental health and substance use provisions. Limited or unlimited? For physicians specifically, this matters more than most people realize.
- Portability. Does your coverage follow you if you change jobs? Group plans don’t. Individual policies do.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a disability insurance policy review take?
About 45 minutes total. We spend 15-20 minutes reviewing your policy details after you submit them. Then we schedule a 30-minute call to walk you through what we found.
Do I need to have my disability insurance policy documents ready?
No. If you know your carrier and can find your most recent policy summary, that’s plenty to start. Missing documents are common. We’ll help you gather what’s needed.
What’s the catch?
There isn’t one. If your policy is well-configured for your situation, we’ll tell you and you’ll go on with your day. If we find gaps, we’ll show you options, but we don’t push. We work with physicians throughout their careers, so trying to sell you something you don’t need would be counterproductive.
Do you review non-Physicians Thrive policies?
Yes. Most of the policies we review were written by other advisors. We’ll give you an honest read regardless of who wrote your coverage.
Are you going to try to switch me to a new disability insurance policy?
Only if there’s a genuine reason. Sometimes a policy is well-designed and the right move is to leave it alone. Sometimes there are riders worth adding or gaps worth filling. We’ll explain what we see and let you decide.
How is this different from getting a quote?
A quote is a price on new coverage. A review is an audit of what you already have. If you don’t have any policy yet, you probably want a quote. If you have a policy and want to know if it’s still right for you, you want a review.

Group Vs Individual Plans
Employer-provided plans won’t give you the coverage you need in if you become sick or injured. Discover the major differences in coverage between group plans and individual plans in the chart below.
Employer Provided Disability Insurance
Group
There is no guaranteed of coverage or policy renewal. Your employer can change your plan or cancel your coverage at any time
You don’t get to keep your coverage if you leave your current position
Any benefit received is taxed as ordinary income if provided by your employer
If you are working in any capacity your group plan will stop paying you
Own Occupation Disability Insurance
Individual
Policies from independent carriers are non-cancellable and guaranteed renewable which means the company cannot cancel or change your policy
You own your policy so it stays with you from job to job
Benefits are received completely tax-free
If you cannot do your primary duties your policy will pay you the full benefit. You will still have full freedom to work in any other capacity
